Grow Incredible CIC Introduces Climate-Friendly Composting to Local Communities
Grow Incredible CIC, a local not-for-profit organization dedicated to community growing initiatives, has successfully introduced a climate-friendly food waste composting system to local community groups. This initiative aims to promote sustainable waste management while enriching community gardens with high-quality compost.
The first rotary composter was installed at NSDC Coghill Court in response to a resident-led request for a sustainable solution to support their community garden’s raised beds. Miles Harriman, Director of Grow Incredible, provided residents with expert guidance on using the composter effectively—from selecting appropriate materials to managing the composting process. After just ten weeks, residents harvested nutrient-rich compost teeming with Eisenia fetida, commonly known as tiger worms. These beneficial earthworms originated naturally from the compost starter material, eliminating the need for external purchases. The completed compost has since been incorporated into the raised beds to enhance soil fertility and support the upcoming growing season.

Grow Incredible CIC aims to raise awareness about the environmental benefits of rapid food waste composting, which can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 84% compared to landfill disposal.
Building on this success, a second rotary composting unit has been installed at the Winthorpe Road Community Garden, where local community members are currently receiving training throughout the winter months. This initiative has demonstrated a strong community commitment to food waste recycling. While residents were eager to recycle vegetable peelings and other organic waste, they previously lacked the necessary knowledge and skills. Through this project, local communities have been empowered with practical composting skills, fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious way of living.
To further support community education, Grow Incredible has produced a series of promotional video tutorials that will be available on its website in the coming weeks, here is a taster of things to come.
